Most donors give once and never come back
Nonprofits work hard to win a first gift, then lose most of those donors within a year. For a small team, that means starting from zero every campaign. We chose this problem over three other ideas because it is large, it is fixable, and the data to fix it is already sitting in every Givebutter account.

Four reasons this is worth fixing
We weighed four options. One ticked every box.
The Spread offers seven playbooks, from launching a campaign to setting up recurring giving, plus a Wildcard for your own idea. We sketched four ideas, matched each to its closest playbook, and scored them against five questions.
- Big, measurable problem
- Uses data every org already has
- Useful every week, not once a year
- Buildable in 24 hours, no API access
- Shows its value in under a minute
The only option that hit every criterion. Retention is the biggest leak in small-nonprofit fundraising, the transactions export already holds the answer, and the output is a list someone can act on this Monday.

Generate campaign page copy, emails and social posts from a goal. Easy to build, but general AI writing tools already do this, it ignores the org's own data, and many teams were likely to build the same thing.

Turn ticket sales into insights and pricing for the next event. Useful, but only for orgs that run ticketed events, and only a few times a year.

A shareable year-in-review for each donor. Fun and demoable, but a thank-you card alone doesn't stop donors from lapsing. We kept it as a feature inside Donor Radar instead.
Wildcard: Bring your nonprofit's idea to life
The Wildcard asks teams to pair their Givebutter data with an AI tool and build a useful first version of their own idea. Its list of example builds includes "weekly lapsed donor lists", which is the heart of Donor Radar. It also borrows from two other playbooks: finding recurring giving prospects, and turning donor data into a plan.
Read the Wildcard playbookA Monday to-do list, not another dashboard
Upload a Givebutter export and get four short lists, in the order to work through them: monthly donors at risk, donors ready to go monthly, donors who lapsed last year, and champions to thank. Every donor comes with a reason and a drafted email you can edit and send.
Consumer marketplaces live and die by retention. The same playbook works for donors.
Spot who is drifting, find who is ready to commit, thank your best supporters. Donor Radar packages that playbook for a team with no data analyst and an hour a week.
